Early Intervention Orthodontics

Early orthodontic care, often called Phase 1 treatment, is designed for children between ages 6 and 10. This proactive phase focuses on guiding jaw growth and development during the years when bones are still growing and flexible, creating the best foundation for a healthy, confident smile as your child grows.

Phase 1 Orthodontic Treatment Goals

  • Guiding proper jaw growth and development
  • Creating space for permanent teeth to come in correctly
  • Correcting bite issues such as crossbites, overbites, and underbites
  • Addressing habits like thumb-sucking or tongue thrusting
  • Improving the overall appearance and balance of the smile

Why Timing Matters

One of the biggest advantages of early treatment is that non-surgical jaw expansion is only possible during specific growth stages, typically before the upper jaw fully fuses in the early teen years. By guiding growth at the right time, we can correct issues naturally and avoid the need for surgical correction later in life.

The Benefits of Early Orthodontic Care

  • Reduces the need for more complex treatment later on
  • Encourages long-term dental health and stability
  • May help prevent future jaw surgery or tooth extractions
  • Builds self-esteem and confidence early in life

When to See the Orthodontist

Not every child needs Phase 1 treatment. The American Orthodontic Association recommends an initial orthodontic consultation at age 7. An early orthodontic evaluation allows Dr. Mills to spot issues early and recommend the best path forward for your child’s unique smile.

Common Phase 1 Treatments May Include:

  • Palatal Expanders – Widen the upper jaw to make room for permanent teeth
  • Space Maintainers – Keep teeth from shifting after baby teeth are lost
  • Removable Appliances – Help guide jaw growth or correct minor bite issues
  • Limited Braces – Gently move certain teeth or align specific areas
